Iglesia de la Santisima Trinidad

MEXICO CITY, Mexico — While it’s not as opulent as some of the other churches nearby, Iglesia de la Santisima Trinidad has a charm of its own as a quiet sanctuary from the bustle in the busy streets around it.

The Iglesia de la Santisima Trinidad (Church of the Holy Trinity) isn’t the most opulent church you’ll come across in Mexico City, a city full of opulent churches. But it has a charm of its own.

It sits on a busy pedestrian shopping intersection a few blocks from the Zocalo. The inside provides a quiet sanctuary from the bustle outside.

By the standards of other churches nearby, the inside is relatively plain. It doesn’t have the kind of over-the-top altar of some others, but it does feature two interesting aspects. One is its incredibly ornate carved stone facade. The other is a series of stylized statues displayed prominently in the nave that are tributes to the crucifixion of Christ, Mary and Child, and a small case dedicated to children that is packed full of donated toys.
